Meeting the unique needs of our clients is priority one at Custom Cabinets North Atlanta. The owner of this home in Big Canoe, GA wants to live out his golden years in his quiet mountain home. Being secluded has it’s advantages and drawbacks. The main drawback being how to stay connected to the rest of the world. The owner spends a great deal of his time between news aggregate websites and social media. He also enjoys his digital library of music and books. All of which need to be presented in the most comfortable desk possible. We measured him, his chair, and the room to make sure he had the ideal posture and a desk that would fit his needs. The desk is ten feet long and six feet wide. Big enough to handle all his computer equipment and still have room to spread out his paperwork.

A small kidney desk made from solid Black Walnut and hand made Maple plywood. The plywood was made using a vacuum press. The tapered legs are quilted Maple with Rosewood accents on the top. A perfect desk for a laptop. All the function of a full-sized desk with a small footprint that doesn’t overwhelm the room.

The inspiration for this desk started with the couple. I have known them for nearly 18 years as friends of my in-laws. The main thing you notice around them is that they love each other’s company. They love going on vacation together and serving as missionaries abroad with each other. I thought it would be nice to design a desk after a turn of the century “conversation Couch” where the two seats basically face each other. I presented the idea to the wife, who was buying the desk as a gift for her husband’s birthday, and she loved it.

The biggest compliment I can get as a custom furniture maker is if my clients actually use the pieces. I created this student desk for this homeowners children. The Mom has a desk downstairs off the kitchen and family room. I found on a return visit that she liked the desk upstairs in the kids area so much she had taken it over. I was thrilled.
